Journal from TEDx UT Austin | Texas Science Festival 2025
The TEDx UTAustin event took place in Austin, TX, on March 1, 2025. A diverse group of speakers shared their experiences, perspectives, and lessons from various life events. Inspired by the impact of these experiences, the speakers aimed to influence the audience’s thinking and encourage reflection on life’s choices. The central theme of the event was “What Now?”, which urged attendees to consider the next steps in their lives based on wisdom, humanity, and purpose.
The “What Now?” Theme
The theme “What Now?” explored how different life scenarios could lead to unique outcomes based on perspective and decision-making.
A particular story featured a couple who wanted to brainstorm a new business idea and decided to travel to a remote South American village in search of inspiration. However, their journey turned into a profound learning experience, teaching them that life itself provides valuable lessons through travel.
Through their travels, they:
- Made new friends.
- Gained insights into different cultures.
- Learned about local challenges, shortages, and beliefs.
One memorable incident involved a tour guide asking them to carry a loaf of bread while ascending a mountain. The bread was to be offered to the deity believed to protect travelers. This simple act of belief and faith provided a sense of comfort and connection. It demonstrated how traditions and faith play a significant role in fostering a sense of security and community while traveling.
The story emphasized the joy of spontaneous experiences and encouraged the audience to embrace life as it comesrather than following rigid, pre-planned itineraries. The ultimate takeaway was that the unexpected moments in life bring the most rewarding experiences.
The “H” Factor
One of the speakers, a professor, shared his personal journey of overcoming bilingual challenges as a young Spanish-speaking child who moved to Texas in the 1970s.
He introduced the concept of “Serendipity”, describing it as a sequence of life events that lead to happiness and good memories. Throughout his life, he recognized serendipity in various moments, which he attributed to the “H” Factor.”

According to him, the “H” Factor stands for “Humanity.” He explained that human connection, kindness, and inclusiveness play a vital role in shaping our experiences. However, he noted that this sense of humanity is diminishing in modern society and needs to be revived.
He emphasized that when people see life with purpose, they tend to be more inclusive and ensure that everyone is involved in conversations and experiences. This sense of inclusivity directly relates to how human we are and how good a community we create.
The Dopamine Effect
A New York-based neuroscientist explored the impact of love and support in childhood on decision-making and emotional well-being.
He shared his high school experiences, where he and his friends faced similar challenges. One of his closest friends, Carlos, had a positive outlook on life because of the support and companionship of friends. However, after graduation, they all moved on with their lives, leaving Carlos with only his family for support.
Back Story about Carlos
Carlos’ part has a back story that I didn’t want to mention. We can discuss over the phone if you are curious. 👀 🧐
The neuroscientist reflected on how fortunate he was to have a loving mother who always listened, cared, and supported him. He explained that the brain naturally secretes dopamine when people feel happy, loved, and supported.
To illustrate this concept, he presented a graph showing the natural release of dopamine and its connection to happiness. The graph demonstrated how dopamine levels fluctuate based on different experiences.
The takeaway from his talk was the importance of love, care, and emotional support in shaping a person’s ability to make good choices. He emphasized that ensuring everyone feels loved and cared for is essential for emotional well-being.

Let’s find our “H” factor!!
The key takeaway from the TEDx event for me was the importance of finding purpose in every action—both for my personal growth and for my family.
It’s my desire to fill our lives with meaningful experiences and to embrace serendipity, recognizing that even small, unexpected events can lead to happiness and fulfillment.
The event served as a powerful reminder to always do the right thing and to live life with kindness, inclusivity, and a sense of purpose.
